Materials:
A split birch log with bark on (about 24" long)
4 to 6 evergreen tips (the ends of branches about 8" - you may use
artificial ones)
drill
two taper candles
staple gun
glue gun & glue
assorted small pointsettia flowers, pinecones, ribbon and/or ornaments
1. Lay the log flat on your work surface. The split edge is the
bottom, and the curved bark side is the top. The cut ends are the side.
Using the drill and a bit that matches the diameter of the candles, drill
two holes on the top of the log, about 6-8" apart. Stick the candles in
the holes.
2. Lay the stem end of a tip by the base of a candle, with the
"fuzzy" ends hanging over the end of the log. Staple in place,
using just a few to hold. Do this for both ends. Break some tips into
shorter pieces to fill in the middle between the candles.
3. Now you may glue on your flowers and other accents. Make a few
arrangements without gluing first, then glue when they are where you like
them. You are done!
Note: This can be done by older children (9 and up) if you cut & split
the log, and drill it before they get to it. Show them the proper use of a
staple gun and a glue gun.
